How To Turn Your Hips During The Golf Swing

We all know that power in the golf swing comes from the hips, but do you ever feel like your hips are stuck and not moving the way they are supposed to? In this week’s video we are going to talk about hip movement during the golf swing and the requirements we need to meet to maximize the speed and power of our hip turn.

The first requirement of a powerful hip turn is good hip mobility. The ability to internally and externally rotate the hips is essential for good hip turn on the trail leg during the backswing and the lead leg during the downswing.

The second requirement of a powerful hip turn is glute strength. The glutes are an important source of stability and power during the golf swing. Having strong glutes will allow us to generate power from the ground up and protect our spine.

The third requirement of a powerful hip turn is upper/lower body dissasociation. The golfer’s ability to move their upper and lower body separately is essential for a good golf swing sequence in which the hips initiate the downswing.

And last but not least, the fourth requirement of a good hip turn is power. Power is our ability to generate maximal force in a minimal amount of time. In order to generate good power with our hips we must be able to utilize our hip mobility, glute strength, and dissasociation to generate a strong and speedy turn of the hips.

Exercises:

  1. Mull stretch

  2. Barbell RDL (can also be done with dumbbells)

  3. Seated torso rotation

  4. Med-ball wall toss
